The NJAR (New Jersey Association of Realtors) recognizes real estate agents for their annual production with an award called the Ciricle of Excellence. It used to be known as the Million Dollar Sales Club and I recall my first year of qualifying in 1986.
It was a thrill to receive my plaque and get my MDC pin; I still have a pile of them in my dresser drawer. Back then I had to close 15 transactions combined with $2million in sales or rentals to achieve the Bronze level. In those days, we had to wear a suit to work and many of the women in the business could not even wear slacks into the office. Boy have times changed!
The 2010 NJAR® Circle of Excellence Sales Award® level requirements are as follows:
Bronze: $3 Million and 15 Units Minimum or 30 Units
Silver: $7.5 Million and 20 Units Minimum or 70 Units
Gold: $15 Million and 25 Units Minimum or 90 Units
Platinum: $25 Million and 30 Units Minimum or 125 Units
Often there are agents who qualify for one level but have actually done much more business than the award would indicate. One year I transacted over $25 million but only had 28 units so the qualifying level of Gold was as far as I could reach that year. Many of the top agents claim they have sold $50+ million when in fact they have a team of people who work for them as buyers’ agents. They get all the credit for the business, but they split the income. When you have a few people out selling houses in your name and giving you all the credit, it is easier to claim millions in sales production. In my days of hitting the big numbers, I did it with one assistant and it was not easy.
Each January you start back at zero. It was a big deal to qualify for this award with a combination of units and dollar volume and many of the companies paid a bonus if you qualified. Burgdorff Realtors, no longer in existence, used to pay each agent $1,000 bonus if you won the award. Each level indicated your success for the year and when you got to the top, there was a lot of recognition.
In 2006, after twenty consecutive years of working at Weichert Realtors and Burgdorff Realtors, and being named a member of the Distinguished Sales Club, I opened my own Short Hills Real Estate Boutique, and decided to help other agents win awards, as I stood on the sidelines, cheering them on.
For 2010, five of our top agents qualified for the Circle of Excellence. As of February 1st, the NJAR finally allows us to adveritse their success. We also had several agents who transacted millions of dollars in sales but did not have he requisite number of units, so they did not achieve the award. (Truth be told, many agents are happy to sell a few big homes and collect their commissions, but you need those closed units to get an award, and that takes a lot of hard work).
Here are our five winners for 2010 – at the top of their game for real estate sales in New Jersey. Two qualified in the Silver Level and Three in Bronze level.
