If you’ve ever wished you could attend the Red Carpet Premiere of an annual film festival like Cannes, Sundance or Tribeca, then your wish is about to come true. On April 1st, the thrill of the red carpet will happen right here in Millburn, New Jersey. And while you may not see the most famous filmmakers of today, you may very well get a glimpse of the work of the best filmmakers of tomorrow.
The Millburn Film Fest showcases the top picks of original short films created by Millburn Middle School and High School students which are submitted to a panel of local industry experts. Celebrating its 5th anniversary, the Millburn Film Fest was started by township residents Lynn Farscht and Alyssa Russo as a fundraiser for the Millburn Education Foundation. Farscht and Russo were so impressed with a student-made rap video at an Education Foundation Fundraiser six years ago, that they came up with the idea to start an annual fundraiser focusing on the talents of our local students and aspiring filmmakers. As co-chairs of the event, the women have helped to create not only a successful fundraising event, but an event where the students can get real industry feedback on their projects.
Alyssa Russo, a Sales Associate at Towne Realty Group, is pleased to have the support of her company as lead sponsors for the Film Fest again this year. “Supporting our community, particularly our young people, is a large part of our mission as business owners here in Millburn/Short Hills,” states Karen Bigos, who is co-owner of Towne Realty Group, along with Daniel Cannizzo. “These students have worked so hard, and their talent is quite remarkable. Towne Realty Group is proud to provide sponsorship to the Millburn Film Fest, and to celebrate our fine students with a red carpet premiere that allows them to present their works to the public, as well as help raise money for the Educational Foundation. I am especially excited that television and film actor, John C. McGinley, accepted the invitation to be one of the judges this year. John and I attended Millburn High School together, so it meant a great deal to have him screen the films and offer his professional insight.”
“We are such fans of the work of these students,” continues Mr. Cannizzo. “In fact, after attending the Film Fest, we hired two of the winning film makers to shoot videos for our company. Jake Oleson and Jeremy Hochman have shot three films for us that are currently on our company YouTube page.”
The red carpet premiere kicks off at 7 pm on Friday, April 1st, 2016 at Millburn High School, with a screening of the winning films beginning at 7:30. An encore performance will be held at Millburn Bow Tie Cinemas on Wednesday, April 6th at 11 am. Ticket prices range from $10 to $150 and can be purchased through eventbrite.com . The event site allows not only ticket purchases, but the opportunity to donate to the Education Foundation, even if you are not able to attend the Film Fest. Towne Realty Group invites you to join us on the red carpet, enjoy the films and maybe see a future Academy Award winner right here in our own town!
